CHAPTER 16

NICK

Nick couldn’t stop glancing at his watch while he helped with setup at the museum. He normally was all about helping when he could, but the closer it got to his date with Claire, the sooner he wanted to get to the coffee house. The nerves went away, and excitement replaced them.

He and Claire walked into the Bluebird Café and looked around at the surprisingly quiet coffee house. He had expected it to be busy on a Monday afternoon, but most of the regular working customers must have already headed home for the day. Instead, it was lightly filled with a couple of individuals sipping their coffee and reading their books, and some mom groups with their kids.

Nick walked towards the counter and noticed Penny was back there. He panicked for a moment and then remembered that Penny had already met Claire at Easter, so hopefully, it wouldn’t be too awkward for Claire. He was sure that her social tank was getting low from all the small talk she had to do at the museum.

“Oh hey, guys,” Penny greeted them at the register. “Claire, it’s nice to see you again.”

Nick tried to avoid eye contact with Penny for as long as he could. He knew the look she would have on her face right now. It would be the perfect mix of a sassy “What are you guys up to” and “I knew there was something going on between you two.”

Penny was the official matchmaker of the family and felt that she needed to be an integral part of everyone’s love stories. Unfortunately, she was usually right about everything, so that’s why the guys kept coming to her for advice. But it didn’t help with her big ego problem.

“Nice to see you, Penny. I feel like I’m seeing the whole Almada family today,” Claire replied with a smile that he’d seen her use at work when greeting people for a meeting.

“Oh, were there a lot of helpers at the museum for Mom? Ryan picked up some coffees on his way over there, but I wasn’t sure if more people could help.”

“It was packed. But, you know, it seems like half of our family is unemployed, so there were a good number of helpers,” Nick teased.

Penny rolled her eyes. “I’m sorry, and what are you currently doing? Working?”

Nick blushed; he was caught there. “I’ll have a medium hot Americano with cream. Claire, what would you like?”

Claire looked at the menu behind the counter, squinting her eyes a bit. It made Nick wonder if she used glasses or contacts. The little things about someone he never thought about.

“I’ll do the same, please,” she replied.

“Okay, two Americanos with cream coming right up. Don’t worry, it’s on the house,” she said as Nick tried to hand her his credit card.

“Thanks—one of the perks of you running the place, I guess.”

Penny shrugged. “It’s the little things.” She turned around and headed to make the drinks.

Nick looked towards Claire. “Where do you want to sit?”

Claire looked around the room, and he could tell she was in serious thought about the decision.
